If you live in an area that is prone to stormy, wet weather then you will know the importance of flood proofing your home. When an area starts to flood it can be disastrous, not only for homes, but also for businesses too. There are many reasons why an area would flood, for example, if you live near a river then your home is likely to be prone to floods. This is because when there is a heavy storm there is a chance that the river banks will burst, meaning that flooding is highly likely. However, there are a few different thins that you can do to flood proof your home and ensure that you only receive minimal damage to your home should there be a storm.

The first thing that you should do, is to make sure that you do everything in your power to prevent moisture inside of your home. For example, it is a good idea to make sure anything that creates moisture in the home are vented outside, meaning that the moisture exit’s the building rather than lingering around. Another good thing that you can do is to make sure that any drains in your basement are completely clear. This is very important. If the drains in your basement are clogged up by anything then there is no way that water would be able to exit the building, meaning that you are maximising the chance of water damage should there be a flood.

If you are aware that there is likely to be a flood and you have not installed any flood proofing in your home, then don’t worry, you still have a few options available to help you protect your home for water damage, or minimise it at least. For example, as soon as you get a warning that there could be a flood, you should go and buy some sand bags. These sand bags can be placed around areas outside of the home where water is likely to enter the building. When the flood hits, the sand bags will absorb the water that comes into contact with them, meaning that the water is less likely to enter the building in large volumes. There are many places where you can get sandbags.

Finally, if you have no flood proofing in your home and you know that a flood is on it’s way then you still have time to minimise the potential damage. For example, you should remove any valuable items and place them higher up in the home so that they are less likely to be damaged by the water. You can put them on a higher floor, or even in the loft. Obviously this isn’t going to be a solution for all household items, but it does allow you to protect a few things.
